  • Making changes and preserving traditions at 123 West Franklin

    Holden
    29 Oct 2009 | 11:42 am
University Square is still open. Really open. While we have lots of ideas for the site, we’re still at the beginning of the process.  So there’s never been a better time for a Time Out biscuit, a haircut or a new pocketbook from Fine Feathers. Yes, I like a Time Out chicken biscuit as much as the next Tar Heel, and I want to preserve that beloved tradition for the next generation of hungry students. That’s why as we look at making changes at 123 West Franklin, the site of the current University Square shopping center (including Time Out) and Granville Towers student housing, I want to…
  • On the “new untouchables”

    Holden
    27 Oct 2009 | 7:29 am
In the last few days, several people have mentioned to me Tom Friedman’s column from last week called “The New Untouchables”. I had read it on the morning it came out with great interest.  It has a lot in common with the state of the university video we made a couple of weeks ago. Friedman’s point is that globalization and the recession have upped the ante for what it takes to succeed today.  Just knowing the basics is not enough.  Waiting for the post-recession economy to bring work to us is not going to cut it this time around.  The “new untouchables”…
  • Greek community a part of Carolina’s tradition

    Holden
    23 Oct 2009 | 12:41 pm
Much has been written and said about the Greek system and its relationship to the university this semester. So I thought it was time for me to articulate what fraternities and sororities mean to Carolina … and to me. For starters, I should tell you that I wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for Delta Kappa Epsilon. My father pledged the DKEs when he was a student here. And if it weren’t for the DKE house, he and my mother wouldn’t have met. When I came to Carolina, I ended up spending most of my time in a chemistry lab and not pledging a fraternity. So, in a way, my own family is a great…
  • We’re all catchers in the rye

    2 Oct 2009 | 12:38 pm
Oct 1 was First Amendment Day, and — appropriately — we announced a $3.5 million gift for new innovations in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication.  In the Pit, there was a reading of banned books, which I was invited to kick off. I got to pick the book I was going to read. Naturally, I picked “The Catcher in the Rye.” I’ve always felt that all Holdens have a special bond. A few years ago, I had an op-ed published in the New York Times.  I got emails from all over the country, and one was from someone named Holden Lewis.  He said, “I liked…
  • Why UNC has got (cling, clang, sss) steam heat

    Holden
    28 Sep 2009 | 8:34 am
The neighbors closest to our campus have been incredibly patient as Carolina has undertaken projects to improve our energy infrastructure, including repairs to the steam tunnel that connects our cogeneration facility on Cameron Avenue to the rest of the campus. At the University, we are well aware of how important steam and our cogeneration plant are to our operations, but I’m not sure if that knowledge extends beyond campus. So let me tell you the basics of how we generate energy at the UNC cogeneration facility and how we plan to do that even more sustainably in the future. The combined…

Mark Thompson 11/06/2009 11/06/2009 Assistant SportSaturday Editor North Carolina is a basketball school, and it always will be. It’s hard to argue against names like Michael Jordan, Phil Ford and James Worthy. But being part of one of the nation’s best basketball programs doesn’t make you king of the campus. So I came up with the top five list of reasons why it’s better to be a football player at UNC.

David Reynolds 11/06/2009 11/06/2009 SportSaturday Editor Statistically, UNC’s secondary ranks among the very best in the country at grounding an opposing offense’s passing attack. But with a stable of talented quarterbacks — namely Thaddeus Lewis, Jacory Harris and Russell Wilson — lined up to test it, time will soon tell whether North Carolina’s pass defense is truly dominant or just a paper tiger.

    4 Nov 2009 | 9:54 pm
Dealing with Funny Business Four years ago, television insiders were rocked by a fear that the half-hour comedy genre was on its final legs. The field that was once defined by “I Love Lucy,” “Three’s Company” and “Cheers” could not hold an audience. Take, for example, the case of NBC’s powerhouse block of “Must See TV” Thursday. This block defined sitcoms for the latter half of the ‘90s, thanks to hits such as “Friends,” “Seinfeld,” “Just Shoot Me,” “Frasier” and “Will and Grace.”  Once “Friends” and “Seinfeld” ended in 2004 and “Will and…

Photo and pumpkin design by Brittany bass   Autumn is my favorite time of year. The weather is finally cooling off, the leaves are all changing into gorgeous reds and oranges, and best of all, HALLOWEEN! One of my fondest memories of autumn is carving pumpkins with my family. We’d all go to our local produce farm, pick out the biggest and baddest pumpkins we could find, buy way too much apple cider and head home to carve the pumpkins. When it comes to picking pumpkins, though, looking for the biggest is not always the best approach. According to the Pumpkin Masters, when…

I will admit to being quite simply minded.  I don’t care who doesn’t like it.  Marx was right:  a spectre is haunting Europe.  But what’s in a name? I will refrain from calling the European Union a communist plot, because I apparently don’t know enough to use the word communist in a sentence.  In my mind, if a body of elitist politicians get together and write a treaty that resolves to bind half a billion people into ”a citizenship common to nationals of their countries” forcing ”Every person holding the nationality of a Member State” to…
  • Debating the Morality of the Free Market

    Christopher Jones
    5 Nov 2009 | 2:44 pm
Last night, the Carolina Review hosted its first event in its history. The event was a debate on the statement: Government intervention in the Free Market is Moral. Arguing the affirmative was Ralph Byrns, a self-described “leftist libertarian” professor of economics at UNC Chapel Hill. Arguing the negative was John Lewish, a objectivist libertarian professor in Philosophy, Politics and Economics. Unlike last week’s debate on the ethics of health care reform, this debate actually focused on moral issues. The debate was sometimes heated and threatened to spin out of control…

    5 Nov 2009 | 1:07 pm
Almost completely ignored in the current policy debates over health care, climate change and the stimulus package is the legislation currently being taken up by the Senate to protect journalists against being forced to reveal confidential sources. The Free Flow of Information Act would make federal law standards that already exist in the state court proceedings of 49 states and Washington, D.C. The bill would require that judges apply a balancing test weighing the public interest in a free press and investigatory journalism against the compelling interest in disclosing the source. In order…
  • An Historic Election

    Marc Seelinger
    4 Nov 2009 | 9:34 am
Yesterday’s gubernatorial race in New Jersey was an historic election. A year after Barack Obama was elected to the presidency, the formally dark blue Garden State has elected a conservative as its next governor. This is evidence of a growing disillusionment with the Obama administration and its policies. Jon Corzine’s central campaign strategy was to ride the wave of Obama’s popularity and the popularity of his policies to victory. Billboards throughout the state featured Obama and Corzine with the catch phrase “Keep it Going.” In the final days of the campaign, Obama, himself,…

Posted by Pam Lach on October 29, 2009 - 2:12 pmHalloween is upon us once again. Amidst all the talk of a “homegrown” Halloween, what isn’t getting nearly as much attention is the potential threat to women. Every year, our female students report incidents of harassment, verbal abuse, and sexual assault, whether on Franklin Street or at parties. We hear the same thing time after time: women who dress like “sluts” on Halloween should expect to be treated as such. As we put the finishing touches on our costumes, I’d like to take a moment to deconstruct this…
