Research universities key to America’s future in world economy
18 Nov 2009 | 6:39 amA few weeks ago, I mentioned an op-ed by Tom Friedman that I think every college student and parent should read. Yesterday, David Brooks wrote another one of equal clarity and importance. As President Obama visits China, the U.S. has the opportunity to reflect on our attitudes about the future compared to those in China. Brooks posits that we need to get the excitement about the future that we once had and that China has now. At the end of the article, Brooks refers to a Business Week article by Harvard Business School professor and strategy guru Michael Porter called “Why America Needs an… -
Great weather. Beat Duke. Life is good.
11 Nov 2009 | 6:29 amSaturday was a great day for football. Let’s start with the weather. It was perfect. Not only that, but I got to say so on national television. The weather channel was doing cut-ins from Chapel Hill, and I met my new friend Adam Berg. He is a Penn State guy, but he was a good sport about wearing a Carolina T-shirt. Adam does the game time forecasts for different football games throughout the day. During my cut-in, I got to do the forecasts for our game, and FSU-Clemson and USC-Arizona State. He gives ratings to the game weather. Ours was a perfect 10. Here’s a… -
Making changes and preserving traditions at 123 West Franklin
29 Oct 2009 | 11:42 amUniversity Square is still open. Really open. While we have lots of ideas for the site, we’re still at the beginning of the process. So there’s never been a better time for a Time Out biscuit, a haircut or a new pocketbook from Fine Feathers. Yes, I like a Time Out chicken biscuit as much as the next Tar Heel, and I want to preserve that beloved tradition for the next generation of hungry students. That’s why as we look at making changes at 123 West Franklin, the site of the current University Square shopping center (including Time Out) and Granville Towers student housing, I want to… -
On the “new untouchables”
27 Oct 2009 | 7:29 amIn the last few days, several people have mentioned to me Tom Friedman’s column from last week called “The New Untouchables”. I had read it on the morning it came out with great interest. It has a lot in common with the state of the university video we made a couple of weeks ago. Friedman’s point is that globalization and the recession have upped the ante for what it takes to succeed today. Just knowing the basics is not enough. Waiting for the post-recession economy to bring work to us is not going to cut it this time around. The “new untouchables”… -
Greek community a part of Carolina’s tradition
23 Oct 2009 | 12:41 pmMuch has been written and said about the Greek system and its relationship to the university this semester. So I thought it was time for me to articulate what fraternities and sororities mean to Carolina … and to me. For starters, I should tell you that I wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for Delta Kappa Epsilon. My father pledged the DKEs when he was a student here. And if it weren’t for the DKE house, he and my mother wouldn’t have met. When I came to Carolina, I ended up spending most of my time in a chemistry lab and not pledging a fraternity. So, in a way, my own family is a great…

UNC leads 21-13 after sloppy half
21 Nov 2009 | 10:42 amIn a turnover-filled game, North Carolina leads Boston College 21-13 at halftime. The two teams have combined to give the ball away six times. T.J. Yates has thrown two interceptions, and Erik Highsmith also lost a fumble. Thanks to the ball-hawking North Carolina defense, it looked like the Tar Heels were going to run away with this one early on. -

Jim’s Famous BBQ: hits and misses
15 Nov 2009 | 5:50 pmAs the second stop in my series of barbecue blogs, Jim’s Famous BBQ ranks just behind the Q Shack. They serve up a variety of pit-smoked meats including pulled pork and chicken, chopped pork, beef brisket and more. Photo by Danielle Cushing I felt obligated to try the pulled pork (on the right) since that’s what traditional southern barbecue is. It was a bit dry for me, but had a really nice smoky flavor. The texture was nice too; it was stringy and easy to pull apart into smaller bites. I chose the pulled chicken (on the left) as my second meat. It was melt-in-your-mouth moist. I… -
NBC’s comedy Thursday resurrected
4 Nov 2009 | 9:54 pmDealing with Funny Business Four years ago, television insiders were rocked by a fear that the half-hour comedy genre was on its final legs. The field that was once defined by “I Love Lucy,” “Three’s Company” and “Cheers” could not hold an audience. Take, for example, the case of NBC’s powerhouse block of “Must See TV” Thursday. This block defined sitcoms for the latter half of the ‘90s, thanks to hits such as “Friends,” “Seinfeld,” “Just Shoot Me,” “Frasier” and “Will and Grace.” Once “Friends” and “Seinfeld” ended in 2004 and “Will and… -
Taste of fall
3 Nov 2009 | 12:02 pmPhoto by Danielle Cushing Just because Halloween is behind us doesn’t mean you can’t still enjoy some fall treats. I visited four Chapel Hill bakeries to test out their seasonal goodies. Carrot cake cupcake from Sugarland bakery in Chapel Hill. Photo by Danielle Cushing Sugarland Although none of the items at Sugarland are “seasonal” per say, a lot of their items feature fall flavors. I tried the carrot cake cupcake, which turned out to be a good choice despite my low affinity for carrot cake. The cupcakes were very different from the manufactured carrot… -
Cheap last-minute Halloween costume ideas
30 Oct 2009 | 3:23 pmHalloween Costumes on the Cheap For Halloween this year, I am dressing up as Mary Ann from Gilligan’s Island. My costume is a checkered shirt, denim shorts and plain Keds. The total cost of my outfit was $4—I just had to grab a $4 shirt from Goodwill to complete the look. The key is to think of costumes you can create from basic closet essentials. Here are some great costume ideas for little (or no!) cost. Blair from Gossip Girl: She’s the epitome of Upper East Side prep. Defending the Indefensible
19 Nov 2009 | 4:39 pmThree games into this year’s college basketball season, the early verdict is in: The new CAA ticket policy so far is a disaster. Today, the Daily Tar Heel published attendance figures for the first three games of the past two seasons. The statistics show a massive drop-off in student attendance of games. 2009 Season vs. Florida International – 53% of student tickets used. vs. N.C. Central – 47% of student tickets used. vs. Valparaiso – 24% of student tickets used. 2008 Season vs. Pennsylvania – 65% of student tickets used. vs. Kentucky – 85% of student… -
WASPketball
18 Nov 2009 | 10:39 pmEvery year as basketball season kicks off, I become nostalgic for my own basketball career. Surprising as it might be to some readers, I was a serious basketball player growing up. Over the years, I played on some very select, very good teams. One experience, though, is especially illuminating given our very race-conscious surroundings. In 2001, I played on a summer league team on which I was the only white player. Of course, I stood out because of my race. Whenever my parents showed up to one of our games, one of the officials invariably joked that he could guess who my parents were. And all… -

Math 101
17 Nov 2009 | 4:52 pmA recent report by ABC News reveals that the Obama Administration either can’t count, is involved in one of the most massive cases of fraud in American history, or both. The report reveals that spending from the $787 billion stimulus package is in full swing, except that the money is being spent in non-existent places. The report lists several examples. However, on my own initiative, I tracked down North Carolina’s numbers, and the data was quite interesting. For example, take North Carolina’s 37th Congressional District, where two jobs were created or saved with about $4 million. Or… -
A Debate

We have video of the debate sponsored by Carolina Review last week between Professor Ralph Byrns of the UNC Department of Economics and Professor John David Lewis, an adjunct professor at Kenan-Flagler School of Business. The question was “Government Intervention in the Free Market: Is it Moral?” with Professor Byrns arguing the affirmative and Professor Lewis arguing the negative. Enjoy!

Gloria Steinem Rocks

Among her other contributions, Steinem cofounded *Ms. Magazine.* Steinem covered a number of topics in her talk, including equal pay/comparable worth and the need to value caregiving. Despite passage of The Equal Pay Act of 1963, we have not yet achieved equal pay. The 2008 gendered wage gap in median annual earnings for full-time, year-round workers was 77.1.
